in-Home Hospice care

After Life Massage offers mobile hospice care inside the client's home and within assisted living facilities.
Due to the risk of disease, we limit our in-hospital work to final days of current hospice patients only, to avoid putting other clients at risk by transmitting diseases from the hospital environment.

The cost of hospice care is the same as our normal massage rates. Depending on the patient's health, we may need to adjust the duration of the massage. This means if we're hired for a specific time and, upon meeting the patient, determine that the scheduled duration might be too long for their comfort, we'll adjust both the appointment length and price accordingly before service starts. If the client shows discomfort during the massage, we will adjust the time accordingly and adjust price if the difference is beyond 10 minutes. Please note, discomfort can be shown both as physical and/or mental discomfort. For example, if a client with memory issues forgets who we are and begins to be upset by a 'stranger' being near them or touching them, this is causing mental discomfort and revokes consent. If a client begins to shift or pull away from us, this is a sign of physical discomfort.

We must also consider our therapists' well-being when working with clients who have limited mobility. Extended periods of repetitive movements (for example, using the thumb) can cause strain and injury if this becomes the primary method of treatment. Hospice massages will be timed according to both the patient's needs and our therapists' comfort.

For most patients, sessions of 30, 45, or 60 minutes are ideal. For more active and mobile patients, longer sessions of 60, 75, or 90 minutes are possible if desired.
When hiring for hospice care, please be upfront about the client's medical history and background before your appointment. This information is vital to ensure your therapist can perform their job safely and effectively.
It is not uncommon for family members to withhold or conceal medical history out of fear that service will be declined. However, we need to know: Does the patient have cancer? Are they experiencing natural age-related decline? Have they suffered a stroke with medication-induced changes in mental state? Do they have dementia?
Failure to fully disclose the client's medical history may result in appointment cancellation upon meeting the patient, as we cannot safely proceed without understanding their complete medical situation.
If you're visiting this page, you are likely going through a deeply trying time as you journey through the end-of-life care of a loved one—or even for yourself.
After Life Massage wishes you nothing but peace during this time.

As people of any age face the prospect of death, fear, anxiety, depression, and loneliness can become overwhelming. Massage during these final months, weeks, or days can prove deeply beneficial.

Hospice massage provides undivided attention to help the patient feel cared for, safe, and connected, which can ease anxiety, fear, and depression. This gentle touch can help with circulation and ease aches that often develop as patients become less mobile, their bodies growing fatigued.

In an effort to not 'romanticize' the prospect of death or hospice massage, we wish to keep this page direct and specific, as we understand these times are just as hard on the patient's loved ones.
